Café Kandl

Vienna, Austria

The architects IFUB were commissioned to turn an outdated restaurant with restaurant into a Viennese contemporary coffee house. The challenge was to create a classic, yet modern space, that would serve meals and coffee throughout the day, and become a bar at night and until late hours.

The lighting design contributed by proposing a strong atmospheric difference between daytime and night time. At around 15:30, the bright and friendly café, becomes a classic, warm cocktail bar. This effect is achieved by lighting the red curtains in the background and dimming the large feature luminaires to a softer, warmer tone. For the restroom cabinets, we proposed a special infinity mirror effect, utilizing bended linear light profiles.
